Welcome to Barbs4u.com
"Please except my sincere apologies. I am working on another project that takes all of my time. I will be back soon and I have plenty of great Barb info coming your way"
'''''''' New Scientific Barb Names ''''''''
Scientific names change constantly and for many it is somewhat of a mine field, we may like or dislike these changes but they are going to happen even if we like it or not.
The Asian Barb family has been changed quite dramatically and from what the most of us would have referred to as Puntius sp, should now refer to as Puntius sp or Systomus sp or dravida sp or dawkinsia sp and finally for now Pethia sp.
The official name will change but I would think that it may be many years before the average fish keeper refers to the Barb or Puntius in their tanks by the new names. This is not to say that anyone is incorrect but literature in book form takes many years to get out of the system and many aquarists have just a single tank and so may only go by one or two books.
These new names may seem very complicated, especially if you do not understand the groups the barbs were in previously.
Seriouslyfish.com is an excellent site and keeps very up to date information on all aspects of the hobby.
I have attached a link that Matt Ford has very kindly allowed me to use and it uncomplicated the new names.

The aim of this site is to further the knowledge and promote the keeping and welfare of the Tropical and freshwater species of fish known as Barbs. It will help fish keepers successfully Identify barbs for the purpose of keeping and possibly breeding.
Barbs are a group of fish that are becoming more popular
but still remain underestimated or even unnoticed in shop tanks. There are many known and even lesser known species of barbs appearing in fish establishments with different and confusing names. Name changes are a constant in this hobby and this happens throughout the whole range of families and not just Barbs. So if I miss any of these changes, please let me know.
If you wish to upload a good quality photograph and details on how you came across it.
